Professor Earl Ward Plummer was awarded the 2017 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China
On the morning of January 8, 2018, the National Conference on Science and Technology Awards was held in Beijing. Professor Earl Ward Plummer, a visiting fellow at the Institute of Physics, was awarded the 2017 International Science and Technology Cooperation Award of the People's Republic of China. The award was formally set up by the State Council in 1994. The award shall be conferred on foreign experts or organizations that have made important contributions to China’s science and technology undertaking and development. The award shall be presented to no more than ten individuals or organizations each year. Up to now, two foreign experts who have cooperation with Institute of Physics have received this award.
Prof. Plummer is a leading scientist in condensed matter physics, especially in surface science. He has been recognized as the pioneer in the spectroscopy of single atoms on surfaces, in the discovery of surface states and multipole plasmon modes of metals, as well as in the precise measurement of the many-body effects on surface electronic structures. His discovery of charge density waves at the metal/semiconductor interface has immensely inspired the following research in critical phenomena in low-dimensional systems.
Prof. Plummer has mentored many outstanding Chinese young physicists and has actively endorsed them to return to China. In 2000, with Enge Wang and Zhenyu Zhang, he founded the International Center of Quantum Structures (ICQS) in Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and served as the chief scientific advisor. The center has nucleated many top Chinese physicists for their scientific collaborations which led to numerous influential research achievements. ICQS has been playing an immense role in promoting Chinese physicists onto the international stage. Many founding members of ICQS became the leaders in the field of science and technology in China. The innovative model of international collaboration established by ICQS has been adopted in other universities and institutions in China. Prof. Plummer has been enthusiastically serving as a scientific advisor and consultant for China, and promoting the development of China to the rest of the world. He has made outstanding contributions in both science and technology collaborations with China.
